Pa Groom and Junior stood far enough away to watch the action but not be seen. They didn’t speak, taking in the panic and hard work to extinguish the fire.

“This is good for us, Junior.”

“How do you figure?”

“The sheriff and his deputies will be focused on the rebuilding, their attention drawn away from us.”

Junior’s spirits rose. “We’re leaving?”

Pa looked at him, his expression neutral. “Not yet.”

“How much longer are we going to be stuck here? We need to move on.”

Pulling a cigar from a pocket, he bit off one end, settling it between his lips without lighting it. “Patience, son. Their attention is somewhere else, giving us other opportunities.”

Junior fell silent, considering what his father said. The older Groom had always been a man of few words, but the family took those words seriously. “What do you have planned?”

Pa stroked his short beard, his attention on the sheriff. “I’m still thinking on it.”

Junior had become more vocal in his opposition to his father’s sluggish deliberation. He and Sissy were more than ready to leave, build their own life without the interference of his parents. To do that, they needed several more big hauls, which couldn’t be planned in Splendor.

Frustrated, Junior turned to face his father. “How soon until you arrive at a decision?”

He cocked a brow, paying no attention to the irritation in his son’s voice. “Don’t know. You can’t rush a decision as important as this.”

Pa looked up to see Gabe and two of his deputies watching them. The sheriff didn’t move, but the scrutiny bothered Pa. Anytime lawmen found him or his family interesting, he developed a bout of hives, which lasted until he’d put a good deal of miles between them.

“Let’s go.” Pa turned, moving at a fast clip back to the hotel. “We have details to work out. The community festival is a week away.”

Junior picked up his pace to keep up with his father. “What does the festival have to do with us?”

Taking the steps to the St. James two at a time, Pa went straight upstairs, Junior right behind him. When they reached the elder Groom’s room, his father disappeared inside, leaving his son to stare at a closed door.
